Attention is not not Explanation
Paper summary
Challenges broad claims that attention cannot explain predictions and proposes stronger diagnostic tests. Uniform-weight baselines, variation across seeds, frozen attention, and adversarial evaluation examine whether attention carries model-specific explanatory information.
Relevance to the project
Pairs with the preceding critique to design careful influence diagnostics. Tests should evaluate the whole mechanism and distinguish descriptive routing from causal importance.
Does not make every attention visualization a reliable explanation.
