STaR: Self-Taught Reasoner Bootstrapping Reasoning With Reasoning

Paper summary

STaR generates reasoning traces, checks answers, and fine-tunes on successful rationales. Failed attempts can be re-generated with the correct answer supplied, enabling iterative improvement from limited initial rationale examples.

Relevance to the project

An example of self-produced learning data with external correctness anchors. Relevant to tracing where evaluation and information enter a purported self-improvement loop.

Language modelsReasoningLanguage model training

Generated rationales are not necessarily faithful explanations of internal computation.
