Spontaneous evolution of modularity and network motifs.
Paper summary
Evolves networks under goals that switch among combinations of reusable subgoals. Compared with fixed goals, these modularly varying environments promote modular architectures and recurrent motifs in the tested systems.
Relevance to the project
A hypothesis for how reusable mechanism organization could arise. Compare environmental variation patterns while recording the explicit externally chosen goals.
Modularity is not guaranteed under arbitrary changing environments.
