Ecosystem functioning and maximum entropy production: a quantitative test of hypotheses.
Paper summary
Tests three entropy-production hypotheses in food-web models. Living states increase production relative to abiotic baselines in the tested cases, but maximum-production state selection and monotonic gradient-response claims fail with multiple trophic levels.
Relevance to the project
Direct evidence for testing thermodynamic claims rather than making maximum entropy production a defining rule. Compare explicit abiotic controls and account for system boundaries.
Model results do not establish a universal fingerprint of life.
