GENETIC ASSIMILATION OF AN ACQUIRED CHARACTER

Paper summary

Selects fruit flies for a heat-induced wing phenotype and observes increased expression without the inducing treatment after selection. The experiments illustrate genetic assimilation of an initially environmentally elicited character.

Relevance to the project

A reference for interactions between developmental variation, environmental conditions, and inherited construction. Could compare plastic phenotype formation with later evolutionary stabilization.

Genetic representationsLearning and adaptationEvolutionary history

Genetic assimilation is not direct inheritance of every acquired change.
