A dendrite-resolved, in vivo transfer function from spike patterns to dendritic Ca2+
Paper summary
Simultaneous voltage and calcium imaging in behaving-mouse CA2 pyramidal cells found largely output-linked dendritic calcium, with complex spikes preferentially recruiting distal branches and isolated local voltage/calcium events rare. Branch-specific calcium could vary more than voltage, and a compact channel-inspired transfer model predicted amplitudes. This challenges inference of autonomous dendritic computation from calcium alone under these conditions.
Relevance to the project
A measurement-control lead when using dendritic signals as analogies for instruction: soma-linked activity, local gating and independent error computation must be distinguished. Its CA2 preparation is not a direct refutation of the retrosplenial neurofeedback evidence. No architecture, initialization or updater change follows.
Preprint; small cell/animal sample in a specific CA2 preparation and behavior. Individual spines and very fast calcium events were unresolved. The fitted transfer function is phenomenological, and inferred plasticity/credit roles were not directly tested as rewarded synaptic gradient changes. Generalization to other regions/states remains open.
