A Quantitative Description of Membrane Current and Its Application to Conduction and Excitation in Nerve
Paper summary
The paper formulates squid-axon membrane current using capacitance, voltage/time-dependent sodium and potassium conductances and leak current. The targeted conduction section compares a calculated propagated action potential and speed with measured records. Sodium conductance dominates the rapid rise, while delayed potassium conductance and sodium inactivation shape recovery and refractoriness. Ionic-flux comparisons include discrepancies with tracer measurements. The accommodation discussion explicitly says neither direct measurements nor corresponding model calculations were made there; it offers qualitative arguments. Its oscillations section describes heavily damped returns near rest and small constant-current responses, not a general proof of sustained irregular dynamics.
Relevance to the project
Assistant interpretation: distinguishes active signal regeneration and internal recovery variables from evolving weights and slower maintenance of ion gradients. Fast recurrent state could be compared with gain/bias adaptation, but this source neither prescribes an F/H implementation nor demonstrates that frozen arbitrary neural maps will avoid fixed points.
Targeted sections of a squid giant-axon model; no whole-paper critical audit, numerical reproduction or general mammalian/human conclusion. Resting-gradient maintenance and ATP-pump kinetics are not established by the selected passages. Historical voltage/sign conventions differ from modern conventions; mechanical OCR has corrupted equations and some figure text.
